What I've Been Reading
Back in March, when words like “covid” and concepts like “shelter-in-place” really became a part of daily life, I set a few intentions for myself. One of those was to read more, and not just anything. I went off all social media and stopped following “influencers,” and instead I sought books written by authors of color as well as works about other cultures and timely subject matters. These brave and gifted beauty creators have inspired, encouraged, and educated me. Their work has made me literally weep, reassess my worldview, and re-examine everything earnestly. I’m still processing it all and working to integrate what I’ve learned thus far. But for starters, here* are the works that have stood out to me:
Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
Please Look After Mom by Kyung-sook Shin
Interpreter of Maladies and Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri
Educated by Tara Westover
Maybe You Should Talk To Someone by Lori Gottlieb
*I have intentionally omitted links in the hope that it will encourage shopping at local bookstores instead of at the larger online retailers.
